R. bracteata by Alfred William Parsons for Ellen Willmott’s The Genus Rosa published 1914 Also known as the Macartney rose, it was introduced to western cultivation in 1793 following Lord Macartney’s mission to China. Graham Stuart Thomas described it as an ‘aristocratic and altogether splendid rose’, a view not shared in America where it has become a serious pest.
